About Australia's West Pilbara Coast

The West Pilbara Coast and its thriving hub, Karratha, lie in the north of Western Australia (WA) and boast excellent weather, great fishing and spectacular scenery, including the beautiful Millstream-Chichester and Karijini national parks. Also known as the Shire of Roebourne, this amazing region should be on your ‘must visit’ list.

Approximately 1,535 kilometres north of Perth, the West Pilbara Coast is situated 850 kilometres south of Broome on WA’s North West Coastal Highway. The local government office, the Shire of Roebourne, manages an area of approximately 15,197 square kilometres and has its offices in the modern township of Karratha, recognised as the administrative centre of the Pilbara. Also within the Shire are five smaller townsites, including the industry-based Dampier and Wickham, the historic towns of Roebourne and Cossack and the coastal retreat of Point Samson.

Escape the winter chill by retreating to the warmer northern climate of WA and enjoy all that the West Pilbara Coast and Karratha have to offer. Both provide perfect locations for photographing stunning sunsets, seascapes and fascinating landforms. Enjoy the peace and tranquility while fishing from the beaches or share stories and build friendships around the barbeque. It’s such an amazing region, many visitors stay for three months or more.
