Hearson’s Cove, located on the Burrup Peninsula between Karratha and Dampier in the North West of WA, is one of the many beautiful beaches in this region. This lovely sheltered cove is a popular swimming and picnic spot all year round. It’s also one of only a few locations where you can view the spectacular Staircase to the Moon event, which occurs from May through to October.
The Staircase to the Moon, which only occurs in WA, can be viewed clearly from Hearson’s Cove. This phenomenon is caused when the full moon rises over the exposed mudflats at extremely low tide, creating the optical illusion of a staircase reaching to the moon.
This picturesque shell beach boasts amenities such as barbeques, toilets and is conveniently accessible by two wheel drive on a well maintained gravel road.
